The Gift You Have to Give

by Marnée Bellavance

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” – William Shakespeare or Pablo Picasso - the internet can’t seem to agree on who said this originally.

I don’t think either of them would have been referring to volunteering but the idea stuck with me that it very much applies. Most non-profit organizations rely heavily on a volunteer workforce from the Board on down. Or more accurately, from the ticket taker to the recycle sorter, we all can find a place to donate our time and gifts to our favourite organizations.

Cranbrook Community Theatre Society typically engages 20 to 40 volunteers for each of their core season productions to cover all aspects including building, painting, sourcing, acting, directing, producing, designing, crewing and much more. Under each team lead there is a subsection of people needed to carry out the tasks to accomplish the vision and see it through to the strike, the return of the space to neutral.

What makes the perfect volunteer? Showing up when needed and having a good attitude.

Read that again… that is really all it takes. If you show up and want to help there will always be something for you to do, a way for you to share your gift. As a volunteer, you may not even know where you are needed most and sometimes you may be asked to step outside your comfort zone, but the goal of the organization is that you will always be valued and appreciated for what you do. #TeamCCT
